Why was Olivia Newton-John so lovable?

The Gen-X childhood icon of sweetness and beauty broadcast through a gorgeous voice just died. As a collective, we mourn all the phases of ONJ from sweet soulful country singer to good girl turned (superficially) bad Sandy to Muse for a psychedelic roller rink nightclub to sweaty 80s pop singer. She held a lot of pop culture energy in her tiny frame and gorgeous smile.

I don’t remember liking ONJ specifically. Friends on Facebook were talking about loving her voice, loving her. I thought, I don’t remember loving her. I loved the movies she was in. I loved the songs she sang. And then it dawned on me, at the age of 10, I so fully identified with her that I felt like she was me, I was her. There was no separation. I had managed a pop icon enmeshment.

Grease came out. And it was this girl’s dream come true…dancing and singing and “love”. I got the album for Christmas and spent the next six months listening to it on the family record player non-stop. I sang to every song, every day, recreating scenes from the movie. From that sugar sweet “Hopelessly Devoted to You” to the snappy jabbing “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” (“Elvis Elvis, let me be! Keep that pelvis far from me!”). ONJ ventures were fun, delightful, safe and joyous. Then  Xanadu came out and burst my ever-lovin’ mind. My god, was that a psychedelic narcotic dreamscape romp of pure joy.

What does the astrology say?

Did she do that to you, too? Maybe not on the scope she did for me, but I bet she had some impact on you (or your parents). We can take a look at ONJ’s appeal through the lens of astrology.

ONJ has the quintessential 3 markers that make it so. Basically, three aspects or placements will show up telling the same story or imparting the same vibe. It happens in most charts. The story gets told one way, then a second way, then another.

Let’s begin with ONJ’s first house and that 23° Virgo rising. Virgo is a sign associated with being put together, cleanliness (ok, we know the messy Virgos, but we’re not talking about that today), and health awareness. There was so much that was put together about her. Did you ever see her looking a mess or flustered? Even when she was being asked to dance with Gene Kelly and she had very few dancing skills? She was a long-time advocate of health and wellness, supporting organizations like United Plant Savers that works to save endangered herbs while also spreading herbal education and safeguarding historical texts about herbalism. She also founded a wellness center as a place to support those with cancer, like herself.

Next up, that Libra Sun in the first house. Libra is a sign ruled by Venus. Libra is known for conferring a put-together beauty as well as personalities that tend to get fawned over. Conjunct Neptune…the dream maker…this sets ONJ up to be a collective dream girl. In her first house, it’s the presenting factor for her. So much sweetness and beauty and sex-appeal…she had all that.

Final of the three is her Moon in Cancer in the 10th house. A Cancer Moon is one that connects to the populace, an intuitive/inherent ability to provide a sense of safety and nourishment. In the 10th house, this makes that ability to connect in a kind and nourishing way a part of her legacy. ONJ was a safe place to land our admiration and desires. She appeared wholesome and inviting. Like she’d be willing to sit and share a cupcake and tea with you, let you bask in her Libra beauty and Cancer caring for a bit. And she had an edge with Uranus being conjunct her Moon. An indication of her ability to be ahead of the curve with her style or presentation or totally explains the wild lovable weirdness of Xanadu.
