I bet you’ve heard it’s the New Moon. This evening at 9:55pm Eastern time, the Sun and Moon tap glasses and raise a toast to service, care, skillfulness, libraries, systems, geeky women who only have to remove their glasses and let down their hair to become alluring (I kid)… The realm of Virgo is what they honor today with their meeting.
(Suddenly I have a sermon starting in my head. You may have heard it, “Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called Life…” I’ll let you finish the rest.)
Since I began studying astrology back in the 90s I have been told that the New Moon is a time of beginnings, new starts, seed planting. And I dutifully planted my seeds, set intentions, began projects with the phases of the Moon in mind. I would figure out what needed to change and shift my focus in that direction on the New Moon.
A different New Moon practice
But I’m trying something different these days. In a podcast I listened to recently (Coaches Rising: Conversational Leadership), David Whyte (he’s a lovely poet you may have heard of) spoke of the New Moon in a completely new way that intrigued me. He talked about the three days of no light that occur around a New Moon (the day before, the day of and the day after). He asked, with no light, how are we, metaphorically, supposed to know where to go? There is no guiding light. There is no path to be seen. That if we did set out in a direction it would be a total guess and most likely wrong. He said our task during these days is to wait. We are to wait for what comes to us in this liminal time. That eventually the light will appear again and make clear the path.
Waiting in the liminal for the tiny beam of light to begin to grow. And then letting that be the direction we head.
So much different than sitting there with my list (so very Virgo) and intentions prefabricated.
I still have things I want to start. Life is what it is these days. But I’m also inviting a looseness in my body and being to allow this liminal time to come into the shape it wants. I have no idea what that will be, and I guess that’s the point, the allowing and the not knowing.
I’ll report back how it goes.
Readings available
If you’d like to talk about how the planets are reflecting your experience, schedule a reading with me. I bring embodiment, careful languaging, and humor to all my readings.
“Eve
my solar chart reading with you was so lovely. It gave a lot of in depth detail I was not expecting. I felt so comfortable. I really had some great take aways to reflect on. I loved it!”—NW
